These common medications could be releasing ‘forever chemicals’ into the environment

Wastewater treatment plants fail to remove most fluorinated compounds – largely from common medications – with less than 25% removal efficiency, a study led by incoming assistant professor Bridger Ruyle found. The research shows drought conditions could expose 23 million Americans to these chemicals through drinking water. "I think what this study really emphasizes is how prevalent these chemicals are in major PFAS sources and highlights the need for us to better understand what exposures and potential risks are to these classes of chemicals," says Ruyle.
