Adjunct Professor Dimitrios Konstantakos Honored by ASCE

Dimitrios Konstantakos

The NYU Tandon School of Engineering community congratulates Adjunct Professor Dimitrios Konstantakos for receiving the 2018 Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the nation’s oldest engineering society.

The award is bestowed for innovative or outstanding design or construction of foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, or underground construction, and the organization cited his work on deep excavation support systems, saying: “He has truly advanced the state of practice for deep excavations by making knowledge more accessible to practitioners.”

In 2000 Konstantakos launched the website www.deepexcavation.com, creating what has become an online library for deep excavations and helping fellow engineers and contractors address related issues. He is the chair of the ASCE Earth Retaining Structures Committee, as well as the CEO of Deep Excavation LLC, a company that develops user-friendly, robust, high-quality, integrated deep excavation calculation and design software. His areas of expertise include soil-structure interaction, slope stability, and helical piles, and he is the creator of the globally used software program DeepEX.

Konstantakos was involved in the World Trade Center recovery effort in 2001, among other high-profile projects, and has been a strong voice in raising awareness of the important role that geotechnical engineers play.

“Our profession,” he has said, “aims for the sky by going deep underground with imagination and skill.''
