3D Printing Gives Hackers Entirely New Ways to Wreak Havoc

Article cites research on manufacturing and security challenges in 3D printing by Nikhil Gupta, assistant professor in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering at NYU Tandon, in collaboration with other NYU researchers.

3D printing is on the verge of mainstream adoption, which will mean a fundamental shift in manufacturing. … For example, in a recent study, New York University [Tandon School of Engineering] researchers examined two aspects of 3D printing with cybersecurity implications: printing orientation and insertion of fine defects. These tiny errors [introduced] by hackers could not be detected by normal monitoring and verification systems like ultrasonic imaging.
