Programs and Initiatives

Pre-College Students
K-12 Outreach
The School of Engineering's Center for K-12 STEM Education seeks to extend the reach of the university’s high-quality programs by both building on success and leading new projects and initiatives.
In our K-12 STEM education programs, the School of Engineering faculty, students and administrators align our work in classrooms with articulated science and math learning standards, the new Common Core standards and emerging standards in engineering, technology and other disciplines. We engage teachers directly in programs and remain attentive to the learning objectives of the schools and students that participate in our initiatives.

Urban Assembly Institute
Our College preparation and readiness for STEM partnership with the Urban Assembly Institute (UAI) of Math and Science for Young Women is a model collaboration designed and run by the Center for K-12 STEM Education. Young women in grades six through twelve who attend the UAI receive intensive tutoring and mentoring services from School of Engineering students; UAI teachers benefit from extensive professional development opportunities through our faculty; and a growing number of students in the UAI high school take structured, custom-designed, college-level classes in engineering, math and other disciplines at our Brooklyn campus.
Prospective Students
Tandon-WEST
Tandon School of Engineering Women in Engineering, Science and Technology (Tandon-WEST) is held twice a year at the Fall Open House and the Weekend on the Square admitted student event. Tandon-WEST provides prospective students and admitted students with the opportunity to find out about the accomplishments of NYU women in fields traditionally dominated by men. Parents and high school students from the region gather at the university to listen to panelists of established professionals, as well as women currently enrolled at the NYU School of Engineering discuss their experiences.
WEST FEST
An event held each summer for accepted students that provides them with the opportunity to meet fellow prospective students. Along with the opportunity to find out more student organizations, highlighting affinity organizations such as Girls Who Code and the Society of Women Engineers, students also have the opportunity to connect with on campus resources such as the Office of Financial Aid, Student Health Center, Resident Life and many more.

Women in Engineering Explorations Community
at the Othmer Residence Hall
The Women at Tandon Explorations Community at NYU is a women-themed floor in the Othmer Residence Hall created to offer all students a strong support system to reinforce their positive experience as science, technology, engineering and math students. The community will offer opportunities to network with successful alumnae, participate in social functions, get involved in community service, and organize and attend events and activities relevant to the advancement women in STEM.
WoMentorship Program
The WoMentorship Program is a mentoring program for all students interested in women mentors. The program matches sophomore and junior undergraduates with upper-class women, and first-year graduate students with second-year graduate women. Mentors and mentees meet at least eight times each semester and engage in social activities, academic opportunities, and career and professional development. Mentors and their mentees independently plan one-on-one meetings and activities, and attend campus events and programs together.
- Mentors are dynamic students who aid in the growth and progression of their mentees, academically and socially. Mentors also act as role models and lead by example, while serving as a link to student resources on both the Brooklyn and Washington Square campuses.
- Mentees are students who are looking to further engage and learn from women mentors within the Tandon community. Mentees sign up to receive the above benefits from mentors, while contributing to the development of these relationships and the overall success of growing a strong network of students in engineering at Tandon.

Thompson - Bartlett Fellows
Through a generous gift from Ms. Dede Thompson Bartlett, whose father, Mr. George Juul Thompson, was a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1930, students are encouraged to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. This year marked the third year of the Thompson Bartlett Fellowship, in which nine of this summer’s researchers were graciously supported through this fellowship.
Male Allies
The Male Allies Sub-Committee is part of the larger NYU Tandon Women at Tandon Committee. It is committed to building a campus culture that respects and embraces gender diversity, inclusion, and equity.
